Visiting the Sun King

The day finally arrived ! I got to visit Versailles ! I don’t even think I can begin to explain the excitement I felt leading up to this day. I have been wanting to visit Versailles since I started studying Art History in grade 9. I always loved art growing up but we didn’t study art history in school until high school. And as most tween girls I wasn’t focused on studying history outside of school hours… I was too busy reading all the fashion magazines lol.
Up until that point I only knew the basic art history/painters that everyone knows. My grade 9 art history class was my first real exposure to art and architecture from this time period.  I loved art history every year and I even debated following it as a career, Art was definitely my favourite class in school. Sorry I don’t know why I’m giving you a full on background on my art history schooling lol…. Let’s get back to the topic on hand.

Visiting Versailles was at the top of my list on this trip!  Last time I was in Paris I was only here for two days so there wasn’t enough time to visit versailles. So it was the main reason for my trip this year! As we drove up the the gates and my heart was so excited!  Finally seeing Versailles in person! I felt like I could burst I was so happy. We took a guided tour and it was breathtaking! I absolutely loved it!  You go through many rooms but the the main three things are King Louis XIV bedroom, the hall of mirrors and Marie Antoinettes bedroom.
Most people associate Versailles with Marie Antoinette (For obvious reasons) But I always think of King Louis XIV! I mean… he built the whole thing! My association is even stronger now after I watched Versailles (Link to blog post where I review the show!). The Kings bedroom is all red and well… regal. The hall of mirrors is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture and art I’ve ever seen, pictures doesn’t do it justice!  I tried to get as many photos as I could in the short amount of time you get to walk through. And of course we’ve all seen photos of Marie Antoinettes bedroom, it’s covered in flowers! Honestly… my dream bedroom!  The cream and pink tones are a dream!

The gardens are also breathtaking, since we took a tour we only had an hour to walk through the gardens and to go to the gift shop. Which was a very small amount of time. I spent my life savings at the gift shop and walked out of versailles with the biggest smile on my face.
