Red Skirt Life

For todays Outfit I took inspiration from Life Magazine, I've talked about this on my youtube channel a few times but Life magazine has some of THE best vintage photographs. Its where I get most of my inspiration when it comes to fashion from the late 1940s-1950s. I don't know what it is about them but there are so many photos of "real" people. They are not fashion editorials with models, they are real photos of students on campus (Both university and high school). They are probably somewhat staged to create a "candid" look, but it's still a good insight to see what people were wearing at the time. I'm actually going to do an entire blog post dedicated to Life magazine and some of my favourite photos from the 1940s and 1950s so be on the lookout within the next week or so!

But back to the outfit! For this look I am wearing this burnt red, almost brick coloured skirt. I found it at the thrift store for a few dollars! I saw it on the hanger and was intrigued by the colour and the button detail on the pockets. I wasn't too sure about it until I tried it on!  It actually has a beautiful flare to it, which I didn't expect from seeing it hanging on the hanger. It's also made from a really sturdy material so it would be perfect for riding a bike or doing more "sporty" activities. I paired it with this cream sweater from Suzy Shier, it has the most beautiful "collarbone" detail, it almost looks like a doily? In a good way haha. Like I said I was inspired by photos from Life magazine so I decided to pull out one of my saddle shoes! I don't get much wear out of them in the winter because of the snow so I'm excited to be wearing them again. These brown and cream saddle shoes are from B.A.I.T and they are absolutely lovely! What I love about them is that they are fairly narrow, I don't like it when shoes are too chunky width wise, I find them unflattering and they ruin the silhouette of the body by adding too much "weight" on the bottom half so it looks unbalance.... Does that even make sense? I cant find a better way to explain it haha. However this is a personal preference, some people love chunky shoes! Since I wasn't wearing heels I wanted to add another feminine detail to the outfit, so I went for a flower hair clip. I rarely wear this hair clip but every time I put it on I love it, I should really make a point to wear it more. I know flower accessories like this were very popular in the 1940s and I'm hoping to wear them more often this spring and summer.

This outfit was actually part of my outfits of the week video on youtube, if you haven't had a chance to see it yet you can find it below!
